ABSTRACT

Backgraund:

Abdominal cavity may be contamined during cholecystectomy for gallbladder disease s as a result of perforation. The hacteriologic contents of bile and disseminated stones are important.

Material and Method:

Bacteriologic examination of bile and stones of the consecutive 102 cases of cholecystectomy were evaluated. The results of bacteriologic analysis, preoperative history, ultrasonography and preoperative findings were compared.

Findings:

This study includes 79 female (77,5 %) and 23 (22,5%) male patients with the average age; 52,2. Culture oj the bile stones was negative. Twenty percent (20%) of bile culture was positive. Eschericia co li was the most frequently seen bacteria. Culture was positive in fifty percent of the diabetic patients. No significant relationship was found between culture positivity and acute attack history and increase in wall tkiekening of the gallbladder in ultrasonography exanination.

Conclusion:

We stress the importance of prophylactic antibiotics use together with aspirarion-irrigation and debritment in cases of perforation during cholecystectomy.
