ABSTRACT
Purpose:
Pars Plana Vitrectomy is the surgical approachfor treatment of proliferative diabetic retinopathy complications. In this study diabetic patients treated with pars plana vitrectomy were evaluated retrospectively for visual results and complications.
Material and Methods:
166 eyes of 147 patients operated between January 2002-20006 were ineluded in this study.78 patients were ma/e and 69 patients female .The indications for vitrectomy were tractional retinat detachment involving macula in 67 cases, none/eoring vitreous hemorrhage in 42 cases, combined tractional and rhegmatogenous refinal detachment in 24 cases, macıı/er edema due to thickened and taut posterıor hyaloid m I2 cases and premaculer hemorhage in IO cases. Preoperatifvisual acuity ıvas less than 5/200 in 67% of cases.
Results:
Of 166 eyes vitrectomy procedures were combined with encircling band in 39 eye s and with cataract extractıon in 50 eyes. In 46 eye s si/icon oil and in 120 eyes /ong acıing gases were usedas internal tamponade. Postoperatıvely, in 86% of cases visual improvement could be achieved after a follow-up period of 20 months .The most comman comp/ications occurred per and postoperatively were iatrogenic retinal tears (%9) elevated intraocu/er pressure (% 16), lens opacifıcations (%24) recurrent vitreous iıemorhage (% II) Reoperations were performed for various reasons in44 eyesfor a second time.
Conclusions:
lmproved surgical techniques and advances in surgıcal instrumentations in recent years can help to visual improvements followıng vitrectomy in the treatment of proliferativa diabetic retinopathy complıcatıons.
