ABSTRACT

Purpose:

To compare the postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) changes in cases with sulcus fixated intraocular lens (IOL) implantation because of the posterior capsule perforation during phacoemulsification and with in the capsulare bag implantation.

Methods:

34 eyes of 34 patients with sulcus fixated IOL because of the posterior capsule perforation during phacoemulsification were included in this study (Group 1). 28 patients in Group- 1 had phacoemulsification and intracapsular IOL implantation in the fellow eye, these eyes were used as a control group (Group -2 ). After performing anterior vitrectomy to necessary cases, in 20 eyes, a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) IOL and in 14 eyes, a foldable acrylic IOL was implanted in the sulcus in Group 1. In 8 eyes, a PMMA IOL and in 20 eyes, a foldable acrylic IOL was implanted in the capsular bag in Group 2. The IOP values which has been measured by Golmann applanation tonometry preoperatively, 24th hour, 7th day, 1st month, 3th month and 6th month postoperatively were compared among two groups and also among the acrylic and PMMA IOL implanted cases in Group 1.

Results:

The preoperative mean IOP values were 16.8 ± 1.8 mmHg in Group 1 and 16.9 ± 0.9 mmHg in Group 2. There was no statistical significant difference between the mean IOP values of two groups preoperatively (p > 0.05) . There was no statistical significant difference between the postoperative measured IOP values and preoperative IOP values in Group- 1 and 2 (p > 0.05). There were no statistical significant differences in postoperative IOP values between two groups (p > 0.05). For 6 month follow up, the IOP changes in PMMA and acrylic IOL implanted cases in Group 1 were compared and there was no statistical significant difference (p > 0.05).

Conclusion:

In cases which the IOL has to be implanted to the sulcus during phacoemulsification surgery , there is no significant change in IOP in early postoperative period.
