ABSTRACT

Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) is characterized with progressive losses in the number of nephrones and in renal functions, which results in end stage renal disease ( ESRD) The only treatment form is renal replacement therapy. Although the most commonly encountered cause of this dısease ıs glomerulonephrıtes (GN) in Europe, it is Diabetes Mellitus (DM) in Turkey and USA.1n spite of the renal replacement therapies ( RRT). the mortality and the morbıdity ratıos are very high in patients wıth CRF. RRT isa very expensive method which gives rise to very high health expenditures. Uremic patients are hospitalized ten times often compared to nonuremic patıents.

In our study we found that, DM is the first and hypertension (HT) is the second most often cause of CRF, which is concordant with Turkish Nephrology Assodaton data. The reasons why patients are hospitalized can be grouped as: 1) Uremic symptonıs such as nausea, vomitıng; 2) Emergency dialysis endicatıons. DM and HT, the most common reasons of CRF in our country can be taken under control. As a result, adequate treatmellt and control of the patients, which not only decreases the nıortality and the morbidity ratios of these patients, but also decreases health expenditures, is mandotory. In a devetoping country like Turkey, knowing the etiological reasons of CRF and applying a treatment procedure accordngly is the most suitable method for decreasing health expenditures.
