ABSTRACT
Purpose:
To compare the results and effectiveness of monolateral hang-back - resection method and bilateral hang-back method on patients with exotropia.
Material and Method:
Personal folders of total 162 patients with exotropia who applied Istanbul Education and Research Hospital Eye Clinic Strabismus Unit between 2000-2008 years and applied strabismus surgery were analyzed retrospectively. Patients were evaluated according to the applied surgical method; monolateral hangback - resection method applied ones (Group 1= 90), and bilateral hang-back method applied ones (Group 2= 72). Age average of Group 1 was meaningfully higher (P<0.01). Patients' eye acuity and impairment level were determined according to Snellen. There were no statistically meaningful difference between two groups (P>0.05). Preoperative impairment degree was found to be higher in monolateral hang-back - resection method applied group (P<0.01). 8-12 mm resection and 8-11 mm hang-back were applied to Group 1 patients and 8-11 mm hang-back was applied to Group 2 patients. Controls were done at 1st week, 1st month and then in 3 month periods, postoperatively.
Results:
Success ratios were found to be 73% (66/90) in monolateral hang-back - resection method applied group and 66% (48/72) in bilateral hang-back method applied group. Difference between success ratios of the groups was statistically meaningful (P<0.01). Additional operation was done to 1 (1.1%) patient in Group 1 and to 4 (5.5%) patients in Group 2.
Conclusion:
It was found that monolateral hang-back - resection method gives more successful results than bilateral rectus hang-back method in exotropia.
