OBJECTIVE:

The aim of this study is to analyse the results of stapes surgery which is done to improve air-bone gap in otosclerosis and show its benefit in hearing.

METHODS:

30 cases were analysed retrospectively according to their audiological test results, surgical technique and complications. Shortest period of follow-up was 14 months and longest was 78 months. Improvement of air-bone gap was assessed with the following table: Successful: gap being equal or less than 10 dB Partly succesful: gap being more than 10 dB Failure: no improvement or worse.

RESULTS:

Pre-op mean gap score was 36.70 dB. Under general anesthesia stapedotomy was performed to 27 ears and stapedectomy was performed to 3. In 24 cases(80%) gap improvement was considered as successful or partly successful. In 4 cases(13%) SNHL was observed postoperatively.

CONCLUSION:

Although it has complications, stapes surgery in otosclerosis cases is a reliable and effective method.
