Objective:

In our study; 280 patients who applied to our obesity outpatient clinic between October 2010-October 2012 were screened retrospectively. Their demographic futures, body mass index and obesity class, co-morbidities, number of medications used at the time of application and treatment compliance were investigated. We aimed to emphasize the obesity situation in our country via patients who visited our obesity outpatient clinic.

Methods:

We collected data about the parameters searched, using patient files from the obesity outpatient clinic. Results were evaluated using ‘SPSS for Windows’ statistical analysis package.

Results:

89% of the patients were female and 11% were male. Mean body mass index was 41.83±7.47. Patients mostly were elementary school graduates. As co-morbidities; diabetes mellitus, hypertension, coronary heart disease and thyroid disease existed. Common medication usage rate was 79%. 57% of patients had metabolic syndrome and 66% had insulin resistance. Treatment compliance was 32.5%.

Conclusion:

Obesity is a chronic disease spreading in every part of society. Considering obesity- related morbidity, mortality and increasing health costs, obesity must be treated in all kinds of health facilities in the national health system. Attention especially should be paid to the prevention of the disease. Obesity outpatient clinics should be formed in all community hospitals. Educational programmes for the public should be organized by the government. Obesity prevention action should take first place in national health politics.
