Between February 1996 and June 1998, the prostatic weights of 68 patients (mean age 66,1) which were preoperatively calculated by trans- abdominal ultrasonography (TAUS) and trans-rectal ultrasonography (TRUS) matched with the specimen weight after transvesical prostatectomy. The rostatic volumes were 56,5 ± 25,6, 64,9 ± 6,3, 57,5 ± 26,6 for TRUS, TAUS, and specimens respectively. In our study TRUS found to be superior to TAUS according to statistical analysis. We propose using TRUS for calculation of prostatic volume because of its wide use, easy application and high reliability.
