Objective:

Ingrown toenail is a painful illness which is seen in orthopedic policlinics very often. Many methods have been defined in the treatment of this illness. The Winograd method is one of the most frequently used surgical treatment. In this study, we examined the results of the Winograd method which we applied in 2nd and 3rd phase ingrown toenail cases.

Methods:

We retrospectively analyzed 204 ingrown toenail cases of 174 patients who were treated by using the Winograd method in our clinic between 2008 and 2010. Reccurrence rate, time for return to work and patient satisfaction are evaluated.

Results:

Average age of the patients was 34.3 (distribution: 12-69). Ninetythree cases (45.5%) were phase 2, 11 cases (54.5%) were phase 3 according to the Heifetz classification. One hundred and nine patients (62%) were male, 65 patients (38%) were female. Sixty one cases (35%) were left foot 1st toe, 83 cases were (47%) right foot 1st toe, 30 cases (18%) were bilateral 1st toe. Ninety five cases (46.5) had medial side ingrown, 66 cases had (32.5%) lateral side ingrown, 43 cases (21%) had both medial and lateral side ingrown. In 90 cases (44%) antibiotics had been used in the preoperative period due to running infection. Six patients (3.4%) had peripheral vascular illness. Patients had been kept in track for 16 months on average (distribution: 12-28 months) Patients returned to work in 8 days on average (distribution: 3-14 days). Sutures had been removed on the 12th day on average (distribution: 10-14 days). Recurrence was observed in 12 cases (6.8%). Recurrences were observed in the postoperative 3rd month on average (distribution: 2-7 months). None of the patients had osteomyelitis or any serious complication. One hundred and fifty-three patients (87.9%) declared that they were satisfied with the surgical operation applied under sterilized conditions of the operating room.

Conclusion:

Winograd method is a very successful treatment option for patients with ingrown toenail.
