Objective:

To determine the relation between distal symmetrical polyneuropathy severity and HbA1c level of patients diagnosed as type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Methods:

A total of 50 patients, who consulted Istanbul Training and Research Hospital between the dates of May 2010-February 2011 and were diagnosed as polyneuropathy according to EMG observations and as type 2 diabetics, were studied retrospectively; 28 of them were women and 22 of them were men, and the age average was 58.1.

Results:

It is determined according to the EMG results that of the 50 patients, 19 of them were highly, 14 of them were moderately, and 17 of them were mildly distal symmetrical polyneuropathic. The HbA1c level average was determined to be 9.95±2.01%, 8.92±1.96%, and 7.62±1.98%, respectively.

Conclusion:

There is a positive correlation between the severity of distal symmetrical polyneuropathy for patients diagnosed as type 2 diabetes mellitus and HbA1c levels.
