Senun homocystein level has a s pe cia/ importance as a risk factor in cerebrovascu/ar disease. The relation ship between high serum homocystein and strok e is show n in recent studies. Under the lig ht of this knowledge we investigated hunger serum homocystein levels in ischemic stroke patients.

We included 59 acute ischemic stroke patients hospitilazed in our clinic between December 2004- April2005, 34 ofthese patıenis werefemale and 25 were male. The median age was 66 in women and 60 in men.

According to our results;the hunger blood homocystein levels were above 30 mmol/L (median: 39.1 mmol/L) in 3 patients; 15-30 mmol/L (median:21.2 mmol/L) in 34 and 14 mmol/L orunder this level (median: 10.7 mmol/L) in 22. The results are discussed with literature.

In developed communities, the cerebrovascular diseases are one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity. Hypertension, hyperchlorestero/emia, cigarette smoking, diabetes mellitus and aging are already known rifkfactors for stroke.

Recently; High serum homocystein /eve/s are alsa shown asa riskfactor. lt is alsa accepted that serum homocystein levels has relations with Alzheimer type dementia.
