Prevalence of Depression among Patients with Chronic Hepatitis B

Objective:

Hepatitis B virüs infection is a very important health problem for our country. Our country is in a mid-endemic area for hepatitis B infection. The aim of our study is to determine the prevalence of depression among patients with chronic hepatitis B.

Methods:

In this study, 170 cases with chronic hepatitis B who were followed in the İnfectious Diseases polyclinic were included. Beck Depression Inventory was administered to cases.

Results:

This study has shown that depression scores of female cases are higher than males and smokers cases are higher than nonsmokers.

Conclusion:

The presence of depression might be related to poor treatment outcome. Psychiatric assessment and early intervention is very important in this case.
