Outbreak of Acute Heamorrhagic Conjunctivitis in İstanbul in 2010: Clinical Features

OBJECTIVE:

The aim of this study is to describe clinical aspects and features of Acute Hemorrhagic Conjunctivitis outbreak in İstanbul between July-September 2010.

METHODS:

In Ophthalmology department of Istanbul Research and Trainig Hospital; 2625 cases of acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis were examined. A detailed anamnesis were taken. Symptoms and findings were recorded carefully. Conjunctival swabs of 12 randomly chosen patients were collected and sent to İstanbul Univercity Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty Microbiology department to aetiological agent.

RESULTS:

The outbreak started mid-July and outbreak peak was in second and third weeks of august. Continued till last week of September.1353 male ( 51.54 % ), 1272 female ( 48.46 % ) patients suffered. Mean age was 32,46 ± 19,33 ( 2 months – 93 years ). The most common reported symptom was irritation and foreign body sensation ( 98,4 % ). Followed by photophobia ( 79.7 % ). Coxackievirus A24 ( CA24 ) virus isolated all of 12 patients conjunctival swabs.

CONCLUSION:

In conjunctivitis cases with hemorrhage, Acute Hemorrhagic Conjunctivitis and Coxackievirus A24 ( CA24 ) have to be considered.
