Objective:

To research the musculoskeletal diseases in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

Methods:

Folders of 148 patients suffering from pain were retrospectively assessed. The first Group consisted of 74 patients with diabetes mellitus, and there were 74 patients with no diabetes in the second Group. Diagnoses achieved from history, physical examination and laboratory, radiological and electrophysiological (EMG) studies according to positive signs were evaluated. The incidence of musculoskeletal system problems in the Groups were determined. The difference between Groups were compared and statistically analysed.

Results:

Limited joint mobility syndrome (LJMS), adhesive capsulitis, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and peripheral neuropathy incidences were found significantly more frequently in the first Group. No significant correlation was determined between the duration of DM and musculoskeletal problems.

Conclusion:

We determined that patients with Type 2 DM have a higher incidence of musculoskeletal problems than nondiabetic patients.
