Health Professionals’ Smoking Status and Influencing Factors in a General State Hospital in Istanbul

Objective:

In this study, smoking rates and behavior related to smoking in our hospital staffs have been studied.

Methods:

A survey comprising 20 questions was conducted on 164 of 181 personnel working in our hospital. Statistical analysis was performed using Student’s t test, ki-square test and Yates Continuity Correction tests.

Results:

The mean age was 37.07±9.75 of patients who participated in the survey, 35.4% were male, 64.6% were female. 37.2% of the cases were smokers, 52.4% of cases were non-smokers and 10.4% were former smokers. It was detected that an average age of starting smoking in smokers was 18.97±5.6 and 40.9% smokers smoked 11-20 cigarettes per day. It was seen that 13% of smokers had no smokers in their families and 87% of them had at least one smoker in their families. It was detected that 68.9% of them quited smoking at least at one time in their lives, 30.9% of them quited smoking for 6 months, then started again, and 72.2% of them wanted to quit smoking. It was seen that 49.2% of cases wanted to stop smoking to protect their health. Nocorrelation was found between age, sex, marital status, education and occupation.

Conclusion:

Smoking rate is high in our hospital. Health professionals should be educated more in the fight against smoking. A high proportion of smokers (72.2%) were found to have a desire to quit smoking. Therefore, it is important to support them to quit smoking.
