Objective:

We aimed to evaluate the tear functions in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PES).

Methods:

Tear film break-up time (BUT) and Schirmer’s tests were performed under topical anesthesia on 74 eyes of 48 patients with PES and 72 eyes of 36 control subjects. Results were statistically analyzed.

Results:

Both Schirmer’s test and BUT scores were significantly lower in the pseudoexfoliative patients (average values 10.14±5.28 mm and 7.80±3.16 sec, respectively) compared to the control group (average values 12.51±4.76 mm and 9.46±3.13 sec, respectively) (p=0.005 and p=0.002, respectively).

Conclusion:

PES increases the risk of deterioration of tear film stability and dry eye. Tear film parameters should be seen in pseudoexfoliative eyes and treated if necessary.
