In ophthalmology, one of the latest technologies in the trial phase that is considered as a new ray of hope for the visually impaired is the “bionic eye”, and another promising development is stem cell transplantation. Biotechnology has been one of the most rapidly developing areas of science and technology over the last 20 years. The “bionic eye” is one of the remarkable developments in biotechnology. It is composed of glasses with camera, a hand-held computer and an implant placed in the retina. Stem cells also offer new promise in the treatment of many diseases, including in the field of ophthalmology for the visually impaired. The basic sources of stem cells are embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells.
